CalWORKS (TANF)
​CalWORKs is a state program that provides monthly cash benefits to low-income families. A CalWORKs applicant must meet residency, income, and resource requirements. 

​
​​Eligibility:
  • A Family with a child or children under the age of 18.
  • A pregnant person in their second trimester.
  • A pregnant teen.
  • An individual/family who is a resident of California.
  • An individual/family who meets the income and property limits.
  • An individual/family who is a citizen or meets the immigration requirements.​​​​​
Immigrants and CalWORKS
Only documented individuals are eligible for CalWORKs. However, undocumented parents can receive CalWORKs on behalf of their children.

Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI)
CAPI provides cash assistance to certain aged, blind, and disabled legal non-citizens ineligible for SSI/SSP due to their immigration status. CAPI participants may be eligible for Medi-Cal, In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS), and/or CalFresh benefits.​

Eligibility: 
  • An individual who is not a U.S, citizen.
  • An individual who is ineligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) solely based on immigration status.
  • An individual who is at least age 65, disabled or blind.
  • An individual who is a resident of California.
  • An individual’s monthly income is less than the potential CAPI benefit .
  • An individual who has $2,000 or less in resources, such as checking or saving accounts, after exclusion ($3,000 if with a spouse).

General Assistance (GA)
​General Assistance is a county cash assistance program for low-income adults that do not qualify for CalWORKs. Only documented individuals can receive GA.

​
Eligibility:
  • Adults who are at least 18 years old.
  • Have lived in San Mateo County for at least 15 consecutive days.
  • Meet income and resource limits.

State Disability Insurance (SDI)
SDI is a partial wage replacement insurance program for recently unemployed individuals who can't work at their normal job because of physical and/or mental disabilities.

Eligibility: 
  • Be unable to do your regular or customary work for at least eight days.
  • Have lost wages because of your disability.
  • Be employed or actively looking for work at the time your disability begins.
  • Have earned at least $300 from which State Disability Insurance (SDI) deductions were withheld during your base period. Learn more with Calculating Benefit Payment Amounts.
  • Be under the care and treatment of a licensed physician/practitioner or accredited religious practitioner within the first eight days of your disability. The date your claim begins can be adjusted if it does not meet this requirement. You must remain under care and treatment to continue receiving benefits.
  • Complete and submit your Claim for Disability Insurance (DI) Benefits (DE 2501) no earlier than nine days after your first day of disability begins but no later than 49 days, or you may lose benefits.
  • Have your physician/practitioner complete the medical certification portion of your disability claim

Paid Family Leave (PFL)
Paid Family Leave (PFL) provides benefit payments to people who need to take time off work to: care for a seriously ill family member or Bond with a new child or participate in a qualifying event because of a family member’s military deployment. If eligible, people can receive benefit payments for up to eight weeks. Payments are about 60 to 70 percent of weekly wages earned 5 to 18 months before the claim start date.

Eligibility: 
  • Be unable to do regular or customary work.
  • Have lost wages due to the need to provide care for a seriously ill family member, bond with a new child, or participate in a qualifying event resulting from a family member's military deployment to a foreign country.
  • Be employed or actively looking for work at the time your family leave begins.
  • Have earned at least $300 from which State Disability Insurance (SDI) deductions were withheld during the base period. 
  • Complete and submit your claim form no earlier than the first day the family leave begins, but no later than 41 days after the family leave begins 
  • Provide a medical certificate on the care claim for the seriously ill family member. The certificate must be completed by the care recipient's physician/practitioner.

Unemployment Insurance
Californians who are out of work or have had their work hours reduced may be eligible ​for Unemployment through EDD.
 
Eligibility:
  • Have earned enough wages during the base period.
  • Be totally or partially unemployed.
  • Be unemployed through no fault of your own.
  • Be physically able to work.
  • Be available for work.
  • Be ready and willing to accept work immediately.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) 
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provides assistance to people with disabilities. The SSDI program pays benefits to you and certain family members if you are “insured.” This means that you worked long enough – and recently enough - and paid Social Security taxes on your earnings. 
​
Eligibility:
  • Have worked in jobs covered by Social Security.
  • Have a medical condition that meets Social Security's strict definition of disability.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program provides assistance to people with disabilities. The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program pays benefits to adults and children with disabilities who have limited income and resources.

Eligibility: 
  • 65 or older
  • blind or disabled.
  • limited income and resources;
  • is a U.S. citizen or national, or in one of certain categories of immigration
